SEALY – Following a competitive bidding process, TxDOT has selected a contractor to perform emergency repairs on the US 90 bridge crossing State Highway 36 in Sealy. Work is scheduled to begin the week of March 16, and is expected to last two weeks. Upon completion of the repairs, US 90 will be reopened to two-way traffic and the temporary signal lights will be removed.

Gibson & Associates, Inc. of Balch Springs was awarded a $163,000 contract to replace three of the six beams that help support the US 90 roadway. The beams were heavily damaged on Nov. 17, 2014, when an oversized cargo load struck the bottom of the bridge. The load was being carried by an 18-wheeler traveling south on SH 36. US 90 traffic on the bridge has since been reduced to one operational lane. TxDOT is in the process of getting reimbursement from the trucking company responsible for the bridge damage.

During the two-week construction period, weekday daytime traffic on SH 36 will be detoured to Loop 350. This detour will only be in effect while workers are actively repairing the bridge. SH 36 will be reopened to through traffic on nights and weekends.

Traffic on US 90 will continue to be limited to one lane until repairs are complete. The operational traffic lane will be switched during the first week of the project, after the first beam is replaced. No full bridge closures are planned.

Construction on new US 90 bridges over SH 36 and the nearby BNSF Railway tracks is scheduled to begin in 2017.
