The announcement was made by the NJCAA Men’s Golf Coaches Association.
Johnson joins five others who will enter the hall: Abraham Ancer (Odessa College), Chase Seiffert (Central Alabama), Gary Mullett (Springfield Tech), Jason Hyatt (College of DuPage), and Dennis Chattin (Vincennes).
“It’s an honor to be inducted,” Johnson said. “I’ve had a lot of good presidents, athletic directors, and players during my time, and they’ve earned this honor for me. I owe it to a lot of people.
“I’m really appreciative of the Golf Coaches Association for electing me; this is a huge honor.”
Johnson joined Blinn in 2019 and helped launch the Buccaneer men’s and women’s golf teams. Johnson arrived with more than 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, which included stints as head golf coach at Cameron University, Paris Junior College, Cisco Junior College, and Howard Payne University, as well as an assistant football coach at Hardin-Simmons University.
Johnson is in his 38th year coaching and has made his mark as a two-year college coach, with his previous 14 years spent with Paris and Blinn.
“I haven’t worked a day in my life,” Johnson said. “It’s been a fun ride. When you get to coach 18-through-22-year-old athletes, it keeps you young. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”
Aside from his coaching position, Johnson currently serves as president for the NJCAA Men’s Golf Association, a position he also held for two years while at Paris. He has served as an NJCAA All-America nomination committee member and was a voting member for the Golf Week Magazine NJCAA poll and the NJCAA national poll. He also was a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Blinn is the second program Johnson helped launch after having a hand in restarting the Howard Payne golf program in the early 1990s.
In his third season with the Buccaneers, Johnson has led both the men’s and women’s teams to a national tournament appearance (2020-21), while the Blinn men have captured back-to-back Region XIV championships (2020-21 and 2021-22).
“We’ve done a good job to this point,” Johnson added, “and we’ll just continue to get better.”
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
