In Austin County, where 10.4% of residents face financial hardship, education is a vital pathway out of poverty. By equipping students with essential school supplies, the community is not only enhancing their ability to fully engage in their education but also improving their prospects for future academic and economic success. This support also helps alleviate some of the financial strain on families already struggling.

On July 18th, the Bellville High School campus buzzed with activity as the Back-to-School Health Fair took place, thanks to the generosity of local organizations including the Bellville Lion’s Club, Woodmen Life of Sealy and Bellville, CJ’s Tax Service of Bellville, and the Bellville Meat Market. The event was hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Austin County, the Department of State Health Services of Austin County, and the Austin County Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Board, drawing a total of 375 participants.

Over 300 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to students from Austin County schools and Met Head Start. This initiative not only provided the tools necessary for academic success but also offered a wide range of screenings and family services at no cost, thanks to the contributions of 30 vendors represented by 42 individuals.

The fair was more than just a distribution of supplies; it was a testament to the community’s commitment to supporting educational equity and fostering a supportive environment for all students. By coming together to provide these essential resources, the event helped ensure that children in Austin County have the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their financial circumstances.
