AUSTIN – The Texas Military Forces (TMF) report the first group of Texas National Guard (TXNG) soldiers and airmen have arrived along the Texas-Mexico border to take up observational posts in support of the Texas Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Operation Strong Safety.
Earlier this summer, Gov. Rick Perry directed the TXNG to deploy up to 1,000 soldiers to assist DPS with detection and deterrence of criminal activity associated with dangerous drug cartels and transnational gangs. More than 2,200 National Guard personnel volunteered for the up to 1,000 positions authorized by Gov. Perry on July 21.
TXNG personnel are deployed in support roles, and act as a force multiplier for DPS law enforcement. The TXNG is utilizing enhanced observational equipment to help track illegal activity in the Rio Grande Valley.
