Drug Take Back Day was established in 2010 by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as part of its efforts to combat prescription drug misuse and opioid addiction. The event was created in response to the rising rates of drug abuse linked to medications that are improperly stored at home. Held twice a year, Drug Take Back Day provides a safe, responsible way for people to dispose of unused, expired, or unwanted prescription medications. This national initiative addresses key public safety, health, and environmental concerns.

The event is crucial because it helps prevent prescription drug abuse, which often starts with easily accessible medications at home. By encouraging the proper disposal of unused prescriptions, especially opioids, the risk of misuse is significantly reduced. Drug Take Back Day also protects the environment. When medications are improperly discarded, such as by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away, they can contaminate water supplies and harm wildlife. This initiative ensures that medications are disposed of in an environmentally safe manner, preventing pollution.
