Representative Stan Kitzman has been appointed to the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission by House Speaker Dade Phelan. His role becomes effective immediately and involves participating in the periodic review of state agencies to ensure their effectiveness and efficiency.
The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission is a key mechanism for legislative oversight in Texas. The commission reviews state agencies on a 12-year cycle, evaluating their need and performance. It also organizes public hearings where citizens and stakeholders can discuss the agencies’ operations. Based on these evaluations, the commission recommends whether to continue, modify, or abolish these agencies.
Upon his appointment, Rep. Kitzman stated, “This is a distinct honor as well as a great responsibility the Speaker has tasked me with and look forward to serving on such a distinguished committee.”
The commission is comprised of five senators, five representatives, and two public members, appointed by the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the House. In the past 30 years, the commission’s work has led to the abolition of 42 agencies and the consolidation of 53, highlighting its significant role in state governance. The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission has had a positive fiscal impact of one billion dollars. The committee has returned sixteen dollars for every one dollar spent on the committee.
Rep. Kitzman represents House District 85, which includes Austin, Colorado, Fayette, Fort Bend (part), Waller, and Wharton counties. He also serves on the Agriculture & Livestock, Natural Resources, and Rules and Resolutions committees.
