FRED…another name for the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s “Families Reading Every Day” project will be featured this summer at all WIC Clinics in Austin County and the Gordon Memorial Library in Sealy.  With the current situation related to Covid-19, reading together as a family might be easier than ever as life has “slowed down” a little. So, “think outside the box and participate in this online reading program this summer!” The program is scheduled to start JULY 1st.  Program Information will be made available at the above locations starting JUNE 1st. All you must do is sign up online by JUNE 30th at the FRED website located at https://fch.tamu.edu/fred/

Use these simple steps…….

  1. Register Online (Once on the website, left click on the word “REGISTER”) by June 30th
  2. Create an Adult Profile, then create a Child Profile for each child participating
  3. Start a New Session
  4. Enjoy 4 Weeks of Family Fun!

Maybe call up other family members with a video chat option and read with them. Also, consider finding options online and through social media with videos of celebrities reading, or astronauts reading from space.

Watch and listen together and count it for your FRED time! Some communities even have book sharing options that can be accessed while practicing social distancing!  In addition, there are a lot of fun ideas in the FRED Family Guide. Finally, contact your local library to find out their library check out procedures and choose books your child likes. Children are more inclined to listen and follow along with stories they enjoy. As your child grows older, allow him or her to select some of the books you will read together.
