The Texas Thespians contest is one of the largest and most prestigious theater competitions for middle and high school students in the state. Hosted annually by Texas Thespians, a chapter of the Educational Theatre Association, the event showcases the skills of young performers and technicians while providing invaluable educational experiences. This festival draws thousands of students and educators from across Texas. Participants compete in a variety of categories, including monologues, musical theater solos and duets, group acting, and technical theater events like lighting and costume design. Schools also present one-act plays and full productions, vying for recognition and the chance to advance to the National Thespian Festival.
Beyond the competition, students attend workshops led by industry professionals, offering hands-on training in acting, directing, stagecraft, and more. Networking opportunities abound, with college recruiters on-site and scholarship auditions available for those aspiring to pursue theater in higher education. The Texas Thespians contest is typically held in November or December in cities like Grapevine and San Antonio. It celebrates not only theatrical excellence but also the passion and dedication of Texas’ young thespians, making it a highlight of the school year for theater programs statewide.
