The Blinn College men’s soccer team played 16th-ranked Coastal Bend College close in the first half, but a pair of goals after the intermission helped the Cougars earn a 2-0 Region XIV victory over the Buccaneers on Friday at Rankin Field in Brenham, Texas.

“It was a spirited performance from the team tonight and a good reaction to a poor showing on Tuesday,” Blinn head coach Michael McBride said. “There was really nothing big separating the teams today, even though we edged them on shots. The biggest difference was they converted their chances and we didn’t.”

Following the first-half stalemate, the Cougars scored the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute before adding an insurance tally in the 72nd.

With two regular-season matches remaining, Blinn (8-6-3 overall, 5-5 Region XIV) is slated to qualifying for the Gulf South District Tournament and will hope to improve its seeding with a pair of victories.

The Bucs battle Texas Southmost College in a region bout at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Rankin Field.
