The median bachelor’s degree is worth $306,000 for students who graduate on time. But the median conceals enormous variation. Some fields of study, can produce returns of $1 million or more. Others, often have a zero or even negative net financial value. Students constantly hear the refrain that they must attend college to be successful. But, the decision to attend college is less important than the choices that come next: which school to attend, and which subject to study.

Over the course of the last week, news commentators predicted a huge demonstration of thousand(s) of Netflix employees in protest of comedian Dave Chappelle’s The Closer special. How many employees walked out? Not one news organization put the real number in a headline, and only a few had the guts to even tweet that the actual protest was reduced in the end to “crowd of dozens” that gathered outside the company’s West Hollywood offices.
