Bucket Calf Competition

The 2023 Austin County Fair Bucket Calf Competition is a heartwarming tradition where families gather to raise and showcase calves. This project, initially a 4-H initiative, has become a cherished part of the fair.
Children aged 4 to 8 are mentored in calf care, learning everything from bottle-feeding to showmanship. At the fair, these young ranchers display their skills in a genuine cattle show. Interviews add a unique element, and the top performers earn titles like Grand Champion, Reserve Champion, and third place winners.

In 2017, the Bucket Calf Project transitioned to the Austin County Fair, introducing Mentors—high school-aged youth from 4-H or FFA. These Mentors, from various parts of Austin County, including Bellville, Sealy, Brazos, and Faith Academy, play a pivotal role in building the participants’ confidence in the world of showmanship.
