BEEVILLE, Texas — The Blinn College softball team split a doubleheader with Coastal Bend College on the road Wednesday.
The Buccaneers fell to Coastal Bend 2-0 to start the day, then bounced back with a 13-3 win to conclude the doubleheader.
With the split, the Buccaneers are now 10-12 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
“We are still searching for a way to compete consistently,” head coach Rick Church said.
Coastal Bend 2 – Blinn 0
Blinn opened the doubleheader with a 2-0 loss to Coastal Bend.
Renna Toomey pitched a phenomenal game, only allowing two runs on four hits in six innings.
The Buccaneers totaled four hits as Italie Speziale-Potter and Chloe Woodward each had two. Woodward hit for extra bases with a double and triple. However, Blinn could never get on the board.
Coastal Bend scored two runs in the opening inning and held the lead for the remainder of the game.
Blinn 13 – Coastal Bend 3
The Buccaneers bounced back with a 13-3 win to conclude the day.
Blinn’s offense was explosive with 19 hits. Emily Murphy, Keely Castillo, and Toomey led the offense with three RBIs and two runs apiece. Castillo also went 4-for-5, while Woodward and Speziale-Potter each scored two runs in the win.
Nevada Dolnik was solid in the circle, only allowing two earned runs, while striking out five in seven innings.
Coastal Bend took an early 2-0 lead in the opening inning, but Natilee Reed‘s one-run single cut the Cougars’ lead in half.
Blinn took off with a 7-2 lead with six runs in the third inning. Murphy started things off with a one-run single to tie the game. Castillo and Dolnik kept things rolling with one-run singles, and Tommey’s two-run double lifted the Buccaneers to a 6-2 lead. Samantha Rodriguez drove in Blinn’s final run of the inning with a single.
Coastal Bend answered back with its final run in the bottom of the third inning to trail 7-3.
Blinn extended its lead to 10-3 in the sixth inning when Woodward scored on a fielder’s choice, Castillo hit a one-run double, and Toomey hit a one-run single.
The Buccaneers added three more runs to the board in the final inning. Speziale-Potter hit a one-run single, Murphy hit a one-run double, and Castillo followed with a one-run triple to give Blinn a 13-3 lead.
Next, Blinn will take a break from conference play with a doubleheader against Tyler Junior College on Thursday, April 1, starting at 2 p.m.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
