BRENHAM, Texas — The Blinn College men’s soccer team fell to No. 20 Coastal Bend College, 3-2, at Rankin Field Tuesday.
With the loss, the Buccaneers are now 3-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
“We are a lot better than what we showed today, and we made too many basic mistakes to think that we could get results against Coastal Bend,” head coach Michael McBride said. “This group will fight every game for 90 minutes, but we have quality here that we didn’t show today. The battle was even, but the match wasn’t, and they were a better team today than us.”
Rodrigo Marquez and Stefan Fevrier Sildor each scored one goal on two shots, while Cesar Cabrera recorded two shots to lead Blinn’s offense. Diego Berlingeri led the Buccaneers’ defense with five saves.
“We didn’t lack effort and showed a lot of intensity coming out in the second half,” assistant coach Jacob Beerman said. “We showed determination to want to get a goal back. At times, we struggled in the final third getting more chances on goal, but wecan’t be disappointed in terms of the work rate and intensity.”
Coastal Bend took off with a 2-0 lead after scoring in the eighth and 26th minutes. Blinn cut the Cougars’ lead in half when Marquez scored in the 31st minute. The Cougars scored their final goal in the 43rd minute to hold a 3-1 lead at halftime.
Blinn’s defense held the Cougars in the second half, and Fevrier Sildor scored the final goal in the 84th minute for the Buccaneers to trail 3-2.
Next, the Buccaneers will take on No. 4 Louisiana State University-Eunice on Friday, April 23, at 7 p.m. at Rankin Field. The Blinn women’s team will open the doubleheader against No. 13 LSU-Eunice at 5 p.m. Both games will feature Sophomore Day.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
