Blinn College men’s basketball players Bonke Maring (Cypress) and Kylon Owens (Dallas) recently signed letters of intent to continue their academic and playing careers with four-year programs.
Maring, a sophomore forward, signed with The University of Texas at El Paso. Owens, a freshman forward, signed with Tarleton State University.
Bonke earned second-team all-conference honors after finishing second on the team with 12.6 points per game and third in the region with a 62.9 field goal percentage. He was second on the team with eight rebounds per game. He recorded a season-high 21 points against Victoria College on Jan. 20 and recorded five double-doubles this season. Maring totaled 330 points and 225 rebounds in two years with Blinn.
“I could not be prouder of Bonke,” head coach Scott Schumacher said. “He continued to improve and has a great passion for the game and to get better. I couldn’t be happier for him signing at UTEP.”
Owens came to Blinn from South Oak Cliff High School and totaled 37 points and 55 rebounds in 48 minutes of play.
“I am really proud of Kylon,” Schumacher said. “He really improved as the season went on and he will have a tremendous career at Tarleton State. The fact that he has four years still to develop is a positive for him.”
Blinn finished the season with an 11-11 overall record and 8-10 conference record. The Buccaneers defeated Coastal Bend College, 75-66, in the first round of the Region XIV tournament before their season concluded in quarterfinals.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
