BEEVILLE, Texas — The Blinn College men’s soccer team fell to No. 15 Coastal Bend College, 2-1, in the final game of the regular season Friday.
The Buccaneers conclude the regular season with a 6-7 overall record and 5-7 conference record. Next, Blinn will compete in the Region XIV quarterfinals on Thursday, May 20. The opponent and location will be announced at a later date.
“We had another slow start unfortunately, but overall, it was a good performance,” head coach Michael McBride said. “The men really got a grip on the game in the second half and we were toe-to-toe with them until the end. Coastal Bend are worthy Region XIV champions, they are a good team, so hats off to them.”
Marco Del Vecchio led the offense with one goal, while Stefan Fevrier Sildor had one shot on goal.
Adalid Abrego Jr. recorded 10 saves in 80 minutes of play, while Francisco Avila recorded two in the final 10 minutes.
Coastal Bend scored the first goal in the 10th minute and held the 1-0 lead until halftime. Then, the Cougars extended their lead to 2-0 when they scored in the 56th minute.
Del Vecchio scored Blinn’s first goal in the 63rd minute to cut Coastal Bend’s lead in half.
“The guys dug deep again tonight and managed to keep it close with the conference champions,” assistant coach Jacob Beerman said. “I am proud of our efforts, especially being away again and missing a couple of key players. Our biggest priority now is to rest and be ready for Thursday.”
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
