BRENHAM, Texas — The Blinn College baseball team swept Coastal Bend College at Leroy Dreyer Field Saturday.
The Buccaneers opened the doubleheader with an 1-0 win, then run-ruled Coastal Bend 9-1 in seven innings.
With the pair of wins, the Buccaneers are now 19-16 overall and 13-13 in conference play.
“Our pitching was tremendous on the mound today and gave us a shot with a bunch of blanks on the board,” head coach Harvey McIntyre said. “I thought we carried our best at-bats of the year on Thursday and today. They were a complete team today.”
Blinn 1 – Coastal Bend 0
Behind strong pitching, the Buccaneers opened the doubleheader with a 1-0 victory.
Trevor Mott earned the win after surrendering just three hits and striking out 10 in 5 2/3 innings. Jake Olson came in on relief and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Jett Garcia had one hit and drove in one run, while Tyler Russell had one hit and scored one run. Nick Wolff also recorded one hit in the win.
The Buccaneers scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. After Russell was hit by a pitch, Wolff and Garcia hit back-to-back singles, respectively, for him to score.
Blinn 9 – Coastal Bend 1
Blinn finished off the doubleheader with a 9-1 run-rule win in seven innings.
Ben Hovda drove in two runs and scored two runs, while Caleb Schulz and Garcia each scored two runs to lead the offense.
Colten Drake earned the win on the mound after allowing just one run on five hits and striking out nine in seven innings.
Coastal Bend took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Buccaneers used a four-run third inning to take the lead for good. Blinn tied the game when Garcia hit a one-run single, then Hovda kept things rolling with a two-run single, and Kelton drove in Blinn’s final run of the inning with a one-run single.
Blinn added two runs in the fourth inning when Russell and Schulz both scored on an error.
Then, Hovda scored on Russell’s sacrifice fly for Blinn to lead 7-1 in the fifth.
After Wolff scored on an error, Weiss hit a one-run single for Blinn to score its final run in the sixth.
Next, Blinn will compete against McLennan Community College in a non-conference game on Monday, April 26, at 2 p.m. on the road.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
