BRENHAM, Texas — The Blinn College baseball team defeated Spartan Academy, 6-5, in a non-conference game at Leroy Dreyer Field Tuesday.
With the win, the Buccaneers are now 16-15 overall.
“We found a way to have two big innings to take the lead,” head coach Harvey McIntyre said. “What a tremendous effort on the mound by Tanner Sherrill. I am not sure I have ever seen a better 8 2/3 innings of relief.”
Sherrill earned the win after only surrendering one run on five hits, while striking out nine, in 8 2/3 innings.
Tyler Russell drove in two runs and scored one, while Garrison Weiss scored two runs and knocked in one. Nick Wolff and Aaron Kohring each drove in one run, and Kam Kelton and Westley Schields each scored one run.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, the Buccaneers landed on the board with three runs in the fifth inning. Weiss scored the first run on a wild pitch and Russell scored next on an error. Kohring hit a one-run single for Kelton to score and for Blinn to trail 4-3.
Spartan Academy scored its final run in the sixth inning to lead 5-3. However, the Buccaneers strung together four straight hits in the sixth to take a lead for good. Schields opened the inning with a single, Jett Garcia doubled, Weiss hit a one-run single, and Russell hit a two-run single for Blinn to lead 6-5 for good.
Next, Blinn will resume conference play against Coastal Bend College in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 22, starting at 2 p.m. on the road.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
