Four years ago Deputy C.J. Lehman of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was shot in the face with a 12 gauge shotgun and left permanently blinded.  You can read/watch about the incident and follow-up HERE and HERE.  Tuesday August 9th, an Austin County Jury found Shazizz Mateen guilty for the offense of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant and he was sentenced to Life in Prison and a $10000 fine.  Shazizz’s trial was transferred to Austin County to insure that a fair jury selection was possible.   Following the verdict, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department released the following statement via their social media page:

Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that Tuesday August 9th, an Austin County Jury found Shazizz Mateen guilty for the offense of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant and was sentenced to Life in Prison and a $10000 fine.
The long awaited trial stems from a 2018 incident in which Mateen, a wanted sex offender, assaulted a La Grange PD Officer attempting to arrest him and fled to his residence. Fayette County Deputies and LGPD attempted to apprehend the subject and Deputy Calvin “CJ” Lehmann, who volunteered to approach the door as other Officers on scene did not have body armor at the time, was shot by the subject. Deputy Lehmann’s injuries in the incident left him permanently blinded.
The trial began Monday morning and the Jury returned a guilty verdict Tuesday morning before beginning the portion of the trial determining punishment. The jury stayed late Tuesday evening to deliberate on punishment before returning with the decision of “Life in prison” and a $10000 fine, the maximum sentence.
The Sheriff’s Office is pleased and relieved to see justice was served and to have a conclusion to this case.
While this verdict can in no way heal the wounds of Deputy Lehmann or restore to him his sight and the life he was able to live previously, it is our sincerest hope that the closure of this case brings some sense of solace, relief, and peace to Deputy Lehmann and his family, our family.
