Our framers anticipated the need to amend the Constitution as our awareness of Liberty expanded & our need for government diminished.

“I am certainly not an advocate for frequent and untried changes in law and constitutions…But I know also, that laws & institutions must go hand in hand with progress of the human kind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths disclosed, and manner and opinions change with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also…We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy, as civilized society to remain ever under the regime of their barbarous ancestors.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

Jefferson & our framers hoped that we would become more enlightened in our future, where we as a people would increase the Liberty of the individual and decrease the need for government. They had hoped that we would amend the Constitution to reflect greater Liberty and less government. They certainly did not intend for us to amend the Constitution to expand government.

The provision for amending the Constitution does not make it a “living, breathing, document.” That nomenclature has very little to do with the formal & constitutional means of amendment & everything to do with reinterpretation of words OUTSIDE the amendment process. It is patently false & insidiously dangerous. It allows government & courts to functionally amend the Constitution without submitting it to the rigorous & arduous process dictated in the Constitution.

Let’s just be truthful, these “lexical amendments” have not been created to advance Liberty, but to expand government. This is completely antithetical to everything our framers bled and died for.

So here are the questions we must ask of ourselves. If enlightenment is the necessary motivation for amending the Constitution, just how enlightened are we? If advancement of Liberty is the essential driving force for properly amending the Constitution, just how Liberty educated and Liberty minded are we?

To answer these questions, don’t look to your left or your right. Don’t look to those in your Constitutional groups. Look to the population in general. They are the driving force. Now answer the questions…Perhaps we need to spend a little more time and effort educating? Just a thought.

KrisAnne Hall is an attorney and former prosecutor, fired after teaching the Constitution to TEA Party groups – she would not sacrifice liberty for a paycheck. She is a disabled veteran of the US Army, a Russian linguist, a mother, a pastor’s wife and a patriot. She now travels the country and teaches the Constitution and the history that gave us our founding documents. KrisAnne Hall does not just teach the Constitution, she lays the foundations that show how reliable and relevant our founding documents are today. She presents the “genealogy” of the Constitution– the 700 year history and five foundational documents that are the very Roots of American Liberty.
