The race has narrowed for Texas House 13 Representative. Neither of the top two candidates, Jill Wolfskill of Austin County nor Ben Leman of Grimes County, were able to garner the necessary 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff. Wolfskill was able to garner 8,874 (38.51%) in the statewide race and Lemon had a very close 8,349 (36.23%). Both candidates far out spent their opponents in total expenditures for this race (these numbers are according to the candidates election filing report on February 24, 2018 which can be found HERE):
- Ben Leman – $116,622.40
- Jill Wolfskill – $97,761.50
- Marc Young – $11,986.30
- David Stall – $6,495.58
- Daniel E. McCarthy – $1,508.14
Going into the run-off, Wolfskill is sitting in a much better position than Leman with:
Wolfskill having $20,950.71 cash on hand
vs.
Leman having $4,926.74 cash on hand
However, keep in mind that these numbers do not reflect any last minute campaign expenditures the candidates might have made after their filing report.
Assuming the exact same people come out to vote in the runoff, there are 5818 votes that both candidates will have to try to earn in order to secure the necessary 50% to move on to the general election. We will see how things go heading to towards the May 22, 2018 runoff election and will continue to bring you more details as this race develops.
