Unity Day is an annual event founded by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center as part of National Bullying Prevention Month in October. The event serves as a national call to action to spread awareness about bullying prevention by encouraging kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Its core message, “Wear and Share Orange,” invites participants to don the color orange as a visible symbol of unity and support for those affected by bullying.

Orange was chosen as the official color because of its vibrant association with visibility, warmth, and safety. These characteristics resonate with the mission of Unity Day, which aims to make the issue of bullying prevention prominent within schools, workplaces, and communities. Orange serves as a bold statement of solidarity with children and teens who experience bullying, signifying that no child should ever feel isolated or unsafe in their environment.

 

 

The inaugural Unity Day took place in 2011, evolving over time into a widespread initiative that transcends schools. Communities and organizations now participate by organizing parades, creating murals, hosting events, and using social media to spread the message of inclusion. The evolution of Unity Day reflects a growing cultural awareness that bullying is not a “rite of passage,” but rather a harmful behavior that requires collective action to address.

 

 

Each year, Unity Day is held on the third Wednesday of October. In 2024, the event will take place on October 16. Schools and community members are encouraged to get involved by wearing orange, engaging in activities such as Unity Trees or interactive displays, and spreading the message of kindness across social media. Through these actions, Unity Day seeks to unite individuals around the common goal of fostering safe, supportive environments for all students.

The importance of Unity Day lies in its emphasis on shifting societal attitudes toward bullying. For many years, bullying was dismissed as a normal part of growing up, but the efforts of PACER and events like Unity Day aim to change this narrative. By raising awareness and promoting unity, the event sends a clear message that bullying is unacceptable, and everyone has a role to play in preventing it.
