A second-half rally spoiled the Blinn College women’s basketball team’s trip to Tyler, Texas, as host Tyler Junior College defeated the Buccaneers 80-70 in Region XIV action Saturday.
Blinn (17-8, 7-4 Region XIV) had a promising first half against the Apaches, but allowed 45 points after halftime and made matters worse with just 30 points of its own.
“We cannot give up 45 points in the second half,” Bucs head coach Jeff Jenkins said. “We need to work on some defensive mistakes before the regional tournament.”
Blinn led 20-19 after the first quarter and 40-35 at the break before Tyler rallied for a 58-49 lead after the third period.
Freshman guards Jonesha Neal and Wynter Jones paced Blinn with 11 points apiece, and freshman guard Chelsy Singleton and freshman forward Tocarra Johnson each chipped in 10.
Up next for the Bucs is a trip to Angelina College for a region bout beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, in Lufkin, Texas.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 45 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
