Texas shoppers will have two opportunities to save money during Memorial Day weekend as the state’s annual Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday and ENERGY STAR Sales Tax Holiday return May 23–25, 2026.

According to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, both tax holidays begin Saturday, May 23, and continue through midnight Monday, May 25. Texans can purchase qualifying products tax free with no limit on the number of eligible items purchased. Buyers also do not need to provide an exemption certificate.

The Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday allows shoppers to purchase qualifying lawn and garden items tax free, including plants, trees, grasses, mulch, soil, compost, rain barrels, drip irrigation hoses, and moisture-control systems for sprinklers and irrigation equipment. Certain WaterSense-labeled products also qualify for the exemption.

State officials say the program was created to encourage water conservation while helping homeowners reduce landscaping and irrigation costs. Most qualifying lawn and garden products must be intended for residential use to receive the exemption.

At the same time, Texans can also save on select ENERGY STAR-labeled appliances and energy-efficient household products during the ENERGY STAR Sales Tax Holiday.

Qualifying ENERGY STAR products include:

  • Air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less
  • Refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less
  • Ceiling fans
  • Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Dehumidifiers

Several ENERGY STAR-labeled products do not qualify for the exemption, including water heaters, clothes dryers, freezers, stoves, attic fans, heat pumps, wine refrigerators, kegerators, and beverage chillers.

The Comptroller’s Office notes that delivery, shipping, handling, and installation charges count toward an item’s total sales price when determining whether it falls under the exemption price limits. For example, a refrigerator priced at $1,995 with a $50 delivery charge would exceed the $2,000 limit and would therefore be taxable.

Both tax holidays also apply to qualifying online purchases, telephone orders, mail orders, and custom orders, provided payment is completed during the holiday period, even if delivery occurs later.

State officials encourage Texans to support local businesses while taking advantage of the temporary tax savings on energy-efficient and water-saving products.
