On Monday, August 14, 2023, emergency services in Austin County responded swiftly and collaboratively to contain a 10-acre grass fire threatening multiple structures near Hilboldt Road and Brockstein Road in Cat Spring. The coordinated efforts of the Austin County Emergency Services District No. 2, Cat Spring Fire Department, Austin County Emergency Medical Service, Austin County Sheriff’s Office, Austin County Office of Emergency Management, Bellville Volunteer Fire Department, and San Felipe/Frydek Fire Department Austin Co ESD 1 played a crucial role in preventing any loss of homes or injuries.
The incident led to the evacuation of seven homes as a precautionary measure. Drone footage after the fact showed the amount of area consumed and the close call that was averted. The combined efforts of the responders quickly brought the fire under control, averting any damage to homes. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries during the incident.
The successful containment of the grass fire highlights the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration and the importance of rapid response during emergencies. This incident underscores the significance of preparedness, timely action, and the use of technology in managing such situations. Given the ongoing period of drought in our community, it is noteworthy to mention that a burn ban is in place.
