Following a breakout freshman campaign with Blinn College women’s basketball team, guard Chelsy Singleton has been named the 2023-24 Don Wilhelm Award winner as the Buccaneers’ most valuable player.

“I’m just really proud,” Singleton said. “I worked hard in the offseason to be prepared for my first year of college ball, and I’m happy the work paid off. I also wouldn’t have been successful without my teammates and my coaches helping me to improve throughout the season.”

Singleton, who hails from Cypress, Texas, helped the Bucs to a 24-10 overall record, a Region XIV Tournament championship, and a bid in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship tournament in her lone season of junior college ball. The Northwestern State University (Natchitoches, La.) commit paced Blinn with 13.8 points per game to go with averages of two assists, almost four rebounds, and nearly two steals.

Singleton was also named to the Region XIV All-Conference and All-Region first teams.

“We won 24 games this season and without Chelsy getting us crucial buckets in critical situations, we would not have been nearly as good offensively as we were,” Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. “She had a great season as a freshman, and as a reward for that she earned a full scholarship to a Division I school. We’re definitely going to miss her next year.”

The Wilhelm Award is named after former Blinn College athletic director Don Wilhelm, an NJCAA Hall of Famer and member of the Blinn College Hall of Honor who served the college for 10 years.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 47 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
