The Sealy Main Street shared some awesome photos on their social media page on some of the restorations happening in Sealy. The 1887 Sealy Jail received a much needed restoration. Funding for the restoration was provided by the Abe and Irene Levine Trust, the Sealy Economic Development Corporation, and donations received from individuals and businesses in Sealy. You can visit the restored building at the Sealy Historical Park located at Main & Silliman, 211 East Main Street. You can check out Main Street’s post below:
Sealy Area Historical Society Business- THE EXTERIOR OF THE OLD 1887 SEALY JAIL HAS BEEN RESTORED!
The jail was originally built in 1884, burned in 1886, and was rebuilt in 1887, using some of the original boards. The original boards are easy to distinguish given they are obviously charred. The interior of the building is very original. The jail was looking pretty rough on the exterior prior to the recent restoration. Enjoy the before, during, and after photos.
The exterior was originally clad in a combination of longleaf pine and cedar. Some of the boards had deteriorated to the point we had to replace them. We used cedar for the replacement boards.
Funding for the restoration was provided by the Abe and Irene Levine Trust, the Sealy Economic Development Corporation, and donations received from individuals and businesses in Sealy.
The jail will be open for touring during the Spring Fest on April 9 and BOTA Festival April 30th.
