Before the sun rises on Saturday, Sept. 20, Blinn College Government Professor Brian Cravens will slip on his running shoes and embark on a more than 45-mile trek across Fayette County.
Cravens has been running ultramarathons, races of more than 26.2 miles, for three and a half years, but this race has a special meaning to the social sciences professor.
Cravens is dedicating his run to three causes: celebrating Texas Heroes Day, remembered annually on Sept. 18; promoting Blinn’s presence in Schulenburg and reminding people of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
“I like the idea of pushing yourself mentally and physically,” Cravens said. “When you convince your mind of an idea, you find that the body is receptive to it. I run, not only to push myself, but to advocate for causes that are important to me and the people around me. I love being a part of the Blinn family and I hope this run will remind the community of our presence in Schulenburg.”
After a 10-year running hiatus, Cravens was inspired to pick up the sport again after reading Dean Karnazes’ book, “Ultramarathon Man.” He has since run 10 ultramarathons.
Cravens will tally about 46.2 or 48.2 total miles from Flatonia past Round Top, depending which route he chooses, and estimates it will take eight to 10 hours to complete. He is encouraging Blinn faculty, staff and students and community members to run along with him at any point during the race.
Cravens’ friends and family and members of the Blinn-Schulenburg Student Government Association will be stationed along the route to cheer on Cravens and assist him with water and energy gels.
Becky Garlick, Schulenburg campus director, has agreed to join Cravens on part of the trek.
“I may only make it about a hundred yards, but I’m happy to show my support,” Garlick said, laughing. “We’re excited to celebrate our Texas heroes and remind others of how important Blinn College is in this community.”
