Several members of the San Felipe-Frydek Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) are currently attending the 2025 TEEX Municipal Fire School in College Station, a renowned weeklong training program aimed at enhancing emergency response capabilities across Texas. This opportunity comes thanks to the dedication of these local first responders, who took time off from their full-time jobs and completed required coursework in advance. Their participation demonstrates a strong commitment to public safety in Austin County and beyond.

Hosted annually by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), the Municipal Fire School takes place at Brayton Fire Training Field, the largest live-fire training facility in the U.S. Now in its 96th year, the 2025 session draws municipal firefighters, military units, industrial crews, and emergency responders from around the country for hands-on and classroom-based instruction. Courses offered during the week include fire suppression techniques, hazardous materials response, vehicle extrication, pump operations, and incident command, among others. The event also features live demonstration burns and a vendor showcase that highlight the latest tools and technology in the field.

San Felipe-Frydek VFDโ€™s attendance is made possible in part through funding from the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program (HB 2604), a state grant administered by the Texas A&M Forest Service. Established in 2001, the program helps rural fire departments afford training, equipment, and apparatus that might otherwise be out of reach due to limited budgets. Through HB 2604, departments like San Felipe-Frydek VFD can receive reimbursements for firefighter training tuition, assistance with purchasing protective gear, and support for recruitment efforts. These resources play a crucial role in ensuring rural departments can stay equipped and up to date with best practices. Thanks to this valuable training experience, the San Felipe-Frydek VFD continues to strengthen its readiness and response, providing enhanced protection for Austin County residents and those passing through the area.
