The San Felipe Frydek Volunteer Fire Department extends heartfelt gratitude to George and Kathy Bishop for their generous donation of a Surrey Fire Safety Education Trailer, also known as the Fire Safety House. This specialized trailer is designed to help children and parents learn fire safety through interactive, hands-on experiences. Equipped with realistic props and educational mechanisms, the Fire Safety House allows participants to practice essential skills—such as safely escaping a simulated “house” fire—in a controlled, confidence-building environment.
Fire safety education has a proven impact on saving lives. National data shows that children under 14 have a 70% lower risk of dying in a fire compared to the general population, thanks in part to early fire safety training. On average, one child dies in a home fire every day, and nearly 293 children are injured by fires or burns daily. Programs like the Fire Safety House help change those numbers by giving kids the knowledge and practice they need to act quickly and effectively.
Training also addresses a critical behavior in emergencies—fear. Without preparation, children may panic and hide under beds or in closets during a fire, making rescue efforts more dangerous and time-consuming. When kids are familiar with what to do, they are more likely to remain calm, follow escape plans, and meet at designated safe spots. This not only increases their own chances of survival but also helps protect first responders who would otherwise need to search for them in dangerous conditions. In some cases, an informed child can even save the lives of others. If adults are injured, unconscious, or otherwise unable to help, a trained child may still be able to escape safely, call for help, and guide siblings or other family members to safety.
The Fire Safety House provides firefighters with an engaging environment to teach:
- How to prevent fires
- What to do in the event of a fire
- Important safety practices for daily life
When not in use at public education events, the Fire Safety House will serve as a vital training tool for the department’s firefighters, helping them refine techniques and improve safety outreach efforts.
