On Monday afternoon, August 11, the 2025–2026 Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council gathered at the Bellville ISD district office for its first official meeting of the school year. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm as these young leaders came together to begin their work and set the tone for a year of service and collaboration.

Comprised of about 20 students from across the district and supported by adult mentors, the council convened to learn more about their roles, explore the principles of Servant Leadership, and set their focus for the year ahead. Servant Leadership emphasizes putting the needs of others first, listening actively, showing empathy, building trust, and helping those they serve grow and succeed. It’s about leading by example, supporting others, and making decisions that benefit the whole community.

Some of the mentors lending their expertise and guidance included Bellville High School Principal Mr. Dristas, Director of Future Readiness Matthew Mahlmann—who helps ensure students are prepared for college, careers, and life after graduation—and Instructional Strategist Emily Barrera, who works with teachers to develop effective strategies for improving student learning. Their combined experience offers council members a valuable resource for guidance and inspiration throughout the year.

The afternoon included team-building activities designed to build trust and communication skills, followed by campus-based group sessions where students began brainstorming who or what they would like to impact this year on their campuses and the district as a whole. These student leaders will reconvene in September and October to present one to three proposals for service initiatives or projects that align with their chosen focus areas.

Under the guidance of Superintendent Dr. Nicole Poenitzsch, the council serves as a vital bridge between students and district leadership—ensuring student voices are heard, fostering collaboration, and contributing to the growth, unity, and success of Bellville ISD.
