As March approaches, schools, libraries, and families across the country are gearing up to take part in this year’s Read Across America. This year, Read Across America Week runs from March 3–7, 2025, celebrating books and literacy with themed activities designed to engage students, educators, and communities.
Launched by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998, Read Across America originally focused on Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd. Now Read Across America is a week-long nationwide movement filled with exciting events intended to spark a love of reading for students.
How Schools and Communities Are Celebrating
Across the country, schools and libraries are planning special events like read-aloud sessions, book fairs, author visits, and storytelling activities. Educators, volunteers, and even local leaders will be reading to students, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere that makes books come to life.
Parents and community members can also get involved by making reading a part of daily life—whether that means picking up a book at home, visiting the library, or simply sharing stories together.
How You Can Join In
Want to be part of the celebration? Here are a few ways to participate:
-Read with children—at home, in schools, or at community centers.
-Donate books to schools, libraries, or literacy programs.
-Volunteer to read at a local event or classroom.
-Talk about books—ask kids about what they’re reading and start conversations about different themes and ideas.
Libraries are an incredible resource, but if you can’t make it to one in person, plenty of free online reading materials are available. For more information and resources, visit the NEA’s official website.
Let’s come together to celebrate the power of books and inspire the next generation of readers!
