The Greenville Police Department is mourning the tragic loss of Officer Cooper Dawson, Badge #366, who was killed in the line of duty on November 25, 2024.
At approximately 7:40 p.m. Monday, Officer Dawson initiated a traffic stop that escalated into a foot pursuit. During the chase, he was ambushed and shot multiple times in the leg and side. Despite his severe injuries, Officer Dawson displayed extraordinary bravery, returning fire and striking the suspect. Both Officer Dawson and the suspect were transported to Hunt County Regional Hospital. Dawson was later airlifted to Medical City Plano for surgery, but tragically succumbed to his injuries. The suspect remains in critical condition, though their identity has not been released.

Before serving Greenville, Dawson began his law enforcement career in December 2016 with the Garland Police Department after graduating from the Garland Police Academy. He served nearly seven years with Garland PD before transitioning to Greenville. On Tuesday morning, the Garland Police Department remembered Officer Dawson as a devoted husband, father, and friend who wore the badge with pride and served the public with unwavering dedication. His loss is deeply felt by both departments and the communities he served.
