Brenham, Texas — No. 6 Blinn College football (4-0, 2-0) used an explosive offense to defeat Rezolution Prep Academy, 84-12, in a non-conference match-up on Saturday night at Cub Stadium.
“We wanted our guys to get a lot of reps to see our depth and we accomplished that tonight,” said Ryan Mahon, Blinn head coach. “We showed how explosive we could be which is a really good thing moving forward.”
It was the largest margin of victory for the Buccaneers this year as Blinn opens the season 4-0.
Blinn’s three quarterbacks played phenomenal in the pocket. Daveon Boyd completed 10-of-11 passes for 290 yards and five touchdowns. Brock Landis completed 4-of-5 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing in two touchdowns. Brett Bridges compiled 20 yards and threw for one touchdown.
Danny Gray led the receivers with 136 yards on three catches, all for touchdowns, while Corey Smith followed with 119 yards on five catches for one touchdown.
“It was a great experience to go out there and do what I love to do,” Gray said. “Our offense can run it on the ground and throw it over the top which is a big part of why we are so successful.”
Devin McAdoo compiled 77 yards on seven carries, while Carlos Grace tallied 71 yards on 10 carries.
On defense, Jared Young led Blinn with seven tackles, while Terrance Williams Jr. followed with six. Michael Gayden recorded four sacks for a loss of 69 yards, while DeAngelo Alexander caught two interceptions and Darius Milton recovered a fumble.
Blinn opened the game by building a 23-6 lead in the first quarter. The Buccaneers led 14-0 within the first five minutes of play as Boyd connected with Keric Wheatfall with a 16-yard pass and then hurled a 70-yard pass to Eric Peterson with 10:19 on the clock.
Rezolution Prep Academy scored its only touchdown of the half with a four-yard pass with 5:01 left in the first quarter. Boyd threw his third touchdown pass of the quarter, a 10-yarder to Corey Henderson, for the Buccaneers to lead 21-6 with 2:26 remaining. With 44.1 seconds left, the Buccaneers added two more points to the board with a safety to lead 23-6 heading into the second quarter.
Gray and Landis scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to help lead Blinn to a 50-6 advantage at the half.
In the first 16 seconds of the second quarter, Gray caught a 62-yard pass from Boyd in the end zone for Blinn to lead 30-6. Following a fumble recovery by Blinn’s Amorama Noel, the Buccaneers scored off a 64-yard pass from Boyd to Smith for a 36-6 advantage with 13:40 remaining in the first half.
Landis took over in the second quarter and scored on a quarterback sneak from five yards out for Blinn to lead 43-6 with 8:31 left in the first half. Blinn led 50-6 after Landis connected with Gray with a 36-yard pass into the end zone with 3:22 on the clock.
Landis scored two touchdowns in the third quarter for Blinn to lead 64-6 entering the final quarter. First, Landis and Gray linked up with a 38-yard pass for Blinn to lead 57-6 with 6:41 on the clock. Then, Landis rushed the ball in from four-yards out for Blinn to build its lead to 64-6 with 2:52 left until the final quarter.
Rezolution Prep Academy scored its final touchdown of the game with 8:03 left to trail 64-12. Marco Domio quickly answered back for Blinn by returning the kickoff for the Buccaneers to lead 71-12 with 7:48 left.
Quarterback Brett Bridges jumped in to throw Blinn’s next touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, a 21-yard pass to O’Shea Clark with 4:26 left. Kandin Robertson scored on a 90-yard rushing touchdown with 1:41 left for Blinn to seal an 84-12 final.
The Buccaneers will resume conference play on the road against Trinity Valley Community College on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
