The Buccaneers captured the title in the 10-team competition with a 27-hole total of 452 (20-over par). Buccaneer sophomore Cameron Gray was the individual medalist, finishing 2-over par to finish first.
Blinn ended the first day of play on Sunday leading the field and kept that momentum across the tournament’s final nine holes Monday.
“That was a great last nine holes facing the conditions we played in,” Blinn head coach David Johnson said. “It was a solid team effort in those closing nine holes with Cameron and Hunter both shooting 1-under. Van (Miller) finished at level par and Carson (Wray) at 1-over to end the second day. Sam Sewell played well in both rounds and had his best finish after transferring in at mid-term.”
The Bucs have now won two consecutive tournaments after winning the Tyler Junior College Spring Invitational on Feb. 28. Sophomore Hunter McDonough finished first at the Tyler tournament, giving Blinn back-to-back individual medalists as well.
“It’s hard to win a golf tournament; only one team goes home the winner out of all the teams playing,” Johnson added. “We just won back-to-back tournaments, which is a first in all my years of coaching. Congrats to all the players for a great accomplishment.”
Gray said he was proud to see his team prevail through tough weather conditions and capture another tournament, but added that he believes more could be in store for the Bucs.
“We kept the mindset that the weather was going to be tough for everyone on the course, and we just went out and played and kept the high numbers off the scorecard,” Gray stated. “We’ve won back-to-back tournaments now but we feel like we’re still not playing to our own expectations. When we all get there as a team, I think that’s when you’ll really start to see what we’re capable of.”
Across the two days of play, Sewell finished tied for second after shooting 3-over; Wray tied for fourth at 4-over, Kannin Mikulik tied for ninth at 7-over, and McDonough and Miller were 8-over to tie for 12th.
Blinn’s white team finished third overall with a 33-over par outing.
Up next, the Blinn men’s and women’s team will host the two-day Blinn Spring Classic beginning Sunday, April 3, at Brenham Country Club.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
