LUBBOCK, Texas — The No. 13 Blinn College men’s golf team placed sixth at the NJCAA Southwest Championship at The Rawls Course Tuesday.
“The whole team struggled this week with our play on and around the greens,” head coach David Johnson said. “We could never get a good grasp on the roll out or speed of the greens both chipping and putting that you get in west Texas with a 25 mile per hour wind. The guys are anxious to play in Weatherford in a couple of weeks, and I look forward to seeing how we bounce back there.”
Blinn placed sixth after recording team scores of 310, 298, and 313 for a three-round total of 931. No. 1 Midland College won the tournament with a three-round total of 853.
Cameron Gray tied for 24th place after shooting a round of 77 and a pair of 3-over-par 75s to lead the Buccaneers. Hayden Roup finished in 29th with rounds of 2-over-par 74, 77, and 80, while John Baker tied for 30th with rounds of 79, 76, and 78.
“I hit the ball very well throughout the 54 holes, but my short game and putting was very poor,” Gray said. “I took a lot of positives from the tournament and I am ready to hit the drawing board and improve for the District II Championship.”
Riley Simmons tied for 35th with a three-round score of 240, Travis Edwards finished 37th with a three-round score of 242, and Justin Dees placed 39th with a three-round total of 251.
Next, the Blinn men’s golf team will compete in the NJCAA District II Championship, April 25-27, in Weatherford, Texas.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
