The New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department is gearing up for its 74th Annual Celebration, set for Sunday, September 21, 2025, at New Ulm Firemen’s Park. The long-standing community tradition will feature food, family fun, and fundraising—all in support of the local volunteer firefighters who protect the community.

The day kicks off with meat sales to go beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by the drive-thru barbecue line at 10:30 a.m. for plates to go. Dine-in barbecue beef and pork plates will be served starting at 11:00 a.m. in the covered dining area, rain or shine. Plates are $15 for adults and $8 for children ages 6–12, with tea included.

At 1:00 p.m., the live auction begins, offering a variety of items donated by community members and businesses. All proceeds from the auction will go directly toward purchasing firefighting equipment. A silent auction will also run throughout the afternoon.

Special attractions will keep families entertained all day, including:

  • Raffle drawings after the auction
  • A gun raffle
  • A moon walk
  • Kids’ games
  • A cake and plant walk

What Your Support Makes Possible

Volunteer fire departments like New Ulm’s rely heavily on community support to stay equipped and prepared. Firefighting is an expensive operation, even in small towns. Here are some examples of what donations help provide:

  • Fire Engines & Tankers: A new fire engine can cost anywhere from $350,000 to $700,000, depending on size and features. Even used models often exceed $100,000.
  • Protective Gear (Turnout Gear): Each firefighter needs a complete set including helmet, coat, pants, boots, gloves, and air packs. Outfitting just one firefighter can cost $10,000–$12,000.
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA): Essential for fighting structure fires, each unit runs about $6,000–$7,000.
  • Fire Hoses & Nozzles: A single hose can cost $500–$1,000, while specialized nozzles may add another $1,500–$2,000.
  • Rescue Tools (Jaws of Life): Hydraulic rescue tools for vehicle accidents often cost $25,000–$40,000 per set.

These costs quickly add up, making local fundraisers like this one vital for keeping the department ready to respond when emergencies strike. The New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department’s annual celebration is not only a chance to enjoy great food and community fun but also an opportunity for residents to invest in their own safety. By participating, community members ensure that their local firefighters have the gear and tools they need to save lives and property.
