The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service has launched an updated online continuing prescribed fire training course for prescribed burn practitioners, natural resource professionals, landowners and other interested participants across Texas.
Prescribed fire is commonly used to manage native vegetation, improve wildlife habitat, control invasive plants and reduce the buildup of fuels that can contribute to destructive wildfires. Proper planning and training are essential to conducting burns safely and meeting state requirements.
The self-guided course includes six hours of instruction and meets Texas Department of Agriculture continuing fire training requirements for Certified and Insured Prescribed Burn Managers.
Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion and earn six continuing fire training hours through the Texas Department of Agriculture.
The course costs $300. Registration is available at tx.ag/UpdatedContinuingFireTraining.
Morgan Treadwell, Ph.D., an AgriLife Extension range specialist and professor in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, serves as the course instructor.
The updated program provides science-based information that participants can apply when planning and conducting prescribed fires.
Course modules include:
- Laws and regulations
- Smoke management
- Fuel load estimation
- Contingency and escape planning
- Prescribed burn equipment
- Mapping property for prescribed fire
Information about certification and continuing training requirements is available through the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Prescribed Burn Program.
