Sealy Elementary School’s kindergarten class is embracing the great outdoors with the return of the Early Childhood – Learn Grow Eat Go (EC-LGEG) program. This initiative, offered by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Austin County, offers young students a hands-on approach to learning about gardening, healthy eating habits, and the importance of environmental stewardship. Now in its third year, the program continues to inspire a new batch of eager kindergartners to explore the fundamentals of horticulture.

The EC-LGEG program is more than just gardening; it’s an educational adventure that combines the excitement of growing food with vital lessons in nutrition and teamwork. As the students take on various roles within their garden, from planting vegetables to caring for seedlings, they not only learn about the life cycle of plants but also the value of responsibility and working together.
The program’s structure allows children to experience the satisfaction of seeing their efforts come to fruition as gardens bloom with fresh produce. This approach not only enriches their educational experience but also instills a sense of accomplishment and curiosity about the natural world. Sealy Elementary is proud to watch its youngest students flourish in this immersive learning environment, proving that it’s never too early to start cultivating a green thumb and a healthy lifestyle.

The Learn, Grow, Eat & GO! (LGEG) program is enriching the lives of students by melding academic achievement with practical experiences in gardening, healthy eating, and physical activity, all while fostering school and family involvement. This multifaceted program is designed not just for students but also extends its resources to parents, teachers, and extension staff to ensure a comprehensive community engagement.
For Parents: The LGEG program offers a variety of garden kitchen recipes that are both nutritious and simple to prepare. Additionally, it provides detailed guidance on how to set up a small, manageable garden at home, making it easier for families to integrate fresh, home-grown produce into their daily meals.
For Teachers: Educators have access to a wealth of supportive materials to enhance their teaching of the LGEG curriculum. This includes printable student pages, parent letters, and a variety of instructional videos. These resources are designed to help teachers effectively convey the lessons and ensure students receive a holistic educational experience.
