Alvin—Faith Academy Bellville won three of six matches at the Alvin Living Stones Tournament to finish the weekend third in the silver bracket against some tough competition.

The Lady Knights head into their fourth District 9A tilt at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday, September 18 at The Oaks Adventists Christian with their record at 2-1 in district and 8-7-3 overall.  FA will then host Conroe Calvary Baptist Tuesday, September 26 with junior high teams playing at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. The varsity match will begin at 6 p.m.

“We did some good things this weekend versus a couple of strong teams but we still have many things to work on before getting back to district play,” first-year head coach Joshua McLain said. “It’s all about playing at a higher level of volleyball and not just passing a ball over the net or about making a bunch of errors. That comes with an inexperienced team but we are progressing.”

In pool play FA took third by taking a 25-10, 25-11 win over San Antonio Town East. The Lady Knights then dropped a pair of 2-0 matches to TAAPS 3A power Round Rock Christian (25-12, 25-20) and 2A Conroe Covenant (25-19, 25-23).

“I thought we should have pulled out the match against Conroe but too many errors and lackluster play at times hurt us,” McLain said. “RRC had one player who played at an extremely high level and I think that it rattled the girls. We have to learn not to be intimidated by a team like that.”

On day two of the tournament FA swept Houston Family Christian (25-12, 25-10) in the first round of bracket play.  In the second game against a quality FEAST home school squad the Lady Knights dropped a hard-fought 25-23, 25-21 match.

“That team (FEAST) must have had a bad first day or just had a tough draw because they were an all-around good team. They might have been the toughest team I’ve seen us play. Our girls just didn’t quit and we had a pretty clean match against them.”

The loss put FA in the third place match against Arcadia. The Lady Knights pulled out a 25-13, 25-9 win to end the tournament at 3-3 overall.  By a vote of coaches at the tournament Sophomore Marissa Przyborski was selected to the All-Tournament team.

LADY KNIGHT VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Sophomore middle hitter Isabella Schoenborn is this week’s Lady Knight Athlete of the Week. Schoenborn has worked her way back onto the court after an early season injury and helped the team this weekend.

“We put Bella in at middle and she did some good things for us,” McLain said. “It was nice to see her be able to contribute offensively and defensively for the team this weekend.”
