WACO, Texas – Blinn College women’s basketball trailed by 10 points at the half on the road to McLennan Community College but the Buccaneers showed enough determination to come from behind to grab a 71-69 victory Dec. 1 in Waco, Texas.
This game marks the second time that Blinn has had a close game with McLennan and came away victorious as the Buccaneers beat McLennan 72-69 back on Nov. 15.
Katelynn Johnson was able to lead Blinn in points with 19 with the help of three made shots from behind the 3-point line. Chant Lewis was able to chip in 15 points while Shakera Barnes came up with 10 points and Ashley Cherry finished with eight points. Nancy Warioba and Penina Faumui each did a great job on the rebounds.
Blinn was playing hard defensively in the first half but McLennan was able to grab a few offensive rebounds. Those second chances were enough to guide McLennan to a 40-30 lead at the half.
The Buccaneers turned up the intensity on the defensive end even more and limited the second-chance opportunities of McLennan. Blinn came back to grab a six point lead with just over a minute left and were able to hold on for the victory.
Free throws were falling for Blinn against McLennan as they hit 23 of 27 from the foul line. Overall coach Jenkins said his team worked very hard over the Thanksgiving break and it showed against McLennan.
With the win, Blinn now improves their overall record to 6-4 and its conference record stays at 1-1. The Buccaneers will be back in conference play Dec. 3 against Kilgore College at 5:30 p.m.
