Winter is a brutal time for man and beast and while we don’t have snow we can certainly have hard freezes. When this happens everyone wants to go somewhere warm. Feral cats are no exception!
A feral cat is any cat that is unable to be handled and demonstrates anti-social behavior toward people. Some call feral cats free-roaming cats. In the end they are cats that have no home and spend 100% of their time outside. If you are an animal lover and have a hard time seeing cold kitties consider building a cattery for them. You can do it quickly and with little cost.
The Urban Cat League has a list of winter cat shelters that can be built or bought. If you are handy with tools and have the time and desire you can build a house of plywood with the directions from fivercats.com. They even have a video of their houses.
The Maryland Feline Society has this set of directions for using a plastic tub to create the shelter. If you prefer a video take a look here. You can also use a Styrofoam container. Anthony Fazzare has a video showing how to make a shelter out of an Omaha Steaks box.
In the end whatever you use to build your cat shelter will be greatly appreciated by your feline friends!
