Substitute Teacher openings are in the following Centers: BCDC, EMILE HSC, Stoney Point (Del Valle), Elgin HSC, Smithville HSC, Jeff Dock CDC, and Eagle Lake HSC (Eagle Lake, TX). (Specify which center you are interesting in working as a Substitute Teacher.) Trainings are required.

Summary:

The Substitute Teacher Assistant serves as a member of an instructional team assisting with classroom activities and supervision of assigned children in the absence of regular teaching staff, and as directed by Center Director and the Education Director.

Essential Duties:

Essential functions may include any of the following duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following, and are subject to change at the discretion of management at any time:
• Assist with classroom preparation and activities of children as directed by Center Director.
• Assist with maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for children.
• Participate in and assist during meal and snack time following family style meal services and guiding children in clean-up afterwards.
• Assist with daily cleaning of center facilities and preparation of classroom materials.
• Provide a positive image to co-workers and the community by being supportive of the agency's mission, vision and goals.
• Work effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and those with disabilities and special needs.
• Continue professional growth by participating in classes, training programs, workshops/conferences, as needed and required and/or allowed within the agency’s budget.
• Ensure confidentiality of agency and family information assigned to position.
• Report to work at scheduled time and maintain good attendance and availability.
• Perform all duties in a safe, timely and professional manner.
• Actively participate in all program activities with a positive attitude and behavior.
• Perform other job-related duties as directed by supervisor(s).

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the knowledge, skill and/or ability to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. • Knowledge of the State, Federal, and Local standards and regulations that govern the Head Start and Early Head Start Programs
• Ability to follow and support the teacher’s style of classroom management
• Possess problem-solving skills, imagination, patience, reasoning, creativity, judgment, and
• analytical abilities
• Possess positive communication skills, both orally and written in working with children and families
• Understand and follow oral and written directions
• Skill in basic math, with the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide
• Skill in basic writing, including proper grammar, spelling and punctuation
• Ability to communicate in English
• Ability to work cooperatively with a team and individually as required
• Be tactful, courteous, dependable, resourceful, and show initiative; and
• Use of common sense in carrying out job duties and responsibilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position doesn’t include supervisory responsibilities. Communicate related problems, concerns, and training needs to Center Director.

Physical/Work Environmental Factors:

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, and communicating with others. Employee must have visual abilities including close vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Maintain physical condition needed to accomplish the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include Maintaining mobility, walking, sitting, squatting, crawling, kneeling and/or standing for long periods of time, lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 45 pounds such as files and/or program supplies.

Maintain mental capacity sufficient to accomplish the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include handling stressful situations, effective interactions and communicating with children, families, staff, and the general public, and making sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School Diploma/GED

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: (In addition to the above minimum qualifications) 3-6 months of working with children 0 to 5 year old’s.
