Job Title: Safety Specialist/ School Marshal Wage/Hour Status: Salary

Reports to: Superintendent Pay Grade: P1 - 187 Days

Primary Purpose:

Provide day-to-day security at the assigned campus. Manage and monitor safety requirements and protocols. Respond to protect students, staff and visitors in the event of an active threat incident.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
• High school diploma or equivalent, Bachelor’s degree from accredited university, preferred
• Honorably retired peace officer, preferred
• Coursework, training, certification or experience in emergency management, law enforcement, public safety, school safety and security, or related discipline
• Possess and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license
• Possess and maintain a valid Texas license to carry
• Ability to obtain L3 Psychological Clearance prior to employment
• Ability to successfully complete Texas School Marshal course

Special Knowledge/Skills:
• Knowledge of school safety, security, and law enforcement procedures, practices, and related standards and codes
• Knowledge of emergency management/emergency preparedness methodology and concepts
• Knowledge of use and safe operation of firearms
• Strong written and verbal communications skills
• Strong interpersonal and customer service/public relations skills
• Proficient in providing training and presentations to small and large groups
• Proficient in use of office/security technology and use of relevant security-related technology (e.g. security video systems, incident reporting systems, etc.)
• Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
• Ability to coordinate district functions

Experience:

Five (5) years’ experience in some combination of law enforcement, emergency management or school safety and security, or equivalent work experience as determined by the district

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Safety and Security
• Respond to and immediately address any active threat incident on campus.
• Patrol assigned campus and be visible throughout the day, especially during passing periods, lunch periods, drop- off and pick-up.
• Assist with traffic control and be visible during drop-off and pickup.
• Conduct frequent exterior and interior door sweeps to ensure all doors are locked, closed and functioning properly.
• Promote and reinforce district policies and procedures relating to safety and security.
• Demonstrate and maintain firearms proficiency as determined by the district.
• Provide security coverage at campus or district special events and functions, including evenings and weekends.
• Utilize district security cameras to review incidents and/or save video footage as required or instructed.
• Serve as a resource to campus in areas of safety, security and emergency preparedness.
• Assist in conducting required Safety and Security audits and make recommendations as appropriate.
• Develop and coordinate Campus Emergency Planning Team and establish emergency protocols.
• Complete incident reports and other documents as required or directed in an accurate and timely manner.
• Provide regular training and support campus staff on safety.

Communication / Cooperation /Teamwork
• Immediately brief Safety Coordinator and/or Superintendent on safety or security issues discovered and/or brought to your attention.
• Work closely with campus staff and other district personnel to promote a safe and secure environment.
• Work effectively and collaboratively with other individuals and departments.
• Assist in drills and exercises that promote emergency preparedness of campus.
• Serve as liaison between campuses and law enforcement, fire/EMS personnel and other outside agencies responding to incidents or investigating matters of concern to the district.
• Serve as a team member on Level 1 threat assessments when instructed or requested to do so.

• Attend training as required or directed.
• Follow all rules, regulations and policies of BISD and follow directives from the supervisor.
• Follow attendance policy as assigned by the supervisor.
• Perform all duties as assigned by the administration and/or supervisor.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Firearm, holster, magazine pouch, handcuffs, two-way radio, cell phone, security equipment, standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture/Motion: Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling

Lifting: Occasional lifting up to 50lbs

Environment: Prolonged irregular, differentiated work schedule and/or late hours when urgent or emergency situations arise, or when necessary to meet district/department needs; districtwide and occasional statewide travel; regular work both inside and outside, occasional exposure to inclement weather; prolonged use of computer, and repetitive hand motions

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work effectively in a highly stressful emergency environment.
