SUMMARY

The Equipment Operator operates various equipment and trucks involved in the maintenance and construction of county roads and drainage projects. Assist with the construction, maintenance and improvements of county roads in a variety of activities, including back-hoe, dozer work and related equipment. Performs skilled maintenance tasks.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Equipment Operator is supervised by the Work Crew Chief.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates and drives trucks (haul truck, belly dump) and light to heavy equipment. (loader, backhoe, dozer)
  • Performs road and drainage maintenance and/or construction related duties.
  • Assists in the proper maintenance of roadway rights of way including but not limited to trimming trees and shrubbery and debris removal.
  • Assists in the proper maintenance of roadway and drainage facilities including but not limited to pothole repairs, installation of signs and roadside maintenance.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance inspections, service and minor repairs.
  • Communicates and interacts professionally and effectively with co-workers, supervisors, landowners, and the public.
  • Essential Personnel for Emergency Situations.
  • Complies with departmental and countywide policies, procedures and safety standards.
  • Keeps vehicle and equipment clean.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; or
  • Five (5) years related experience may be substituted for education
  • Minimum of two (2) years related experience and training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the means and methods of constructing new roads.
  • Knowledge of patching and maintaining paved roads.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate a level.
  • Knowledge of Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Maintain a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Ability to perform tasks and receive supervision in a professional manner.
  • Ability to be professional, dependable, resourceful, and work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to work well with others as a member of a crew.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records, files and reports.
  • Possesses basic knowledge of the means and methods to maintain and construct roadways.
  • Ability to learn, understand and apply rules and regulations.
  • Understand and follow oral and written communications.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow workers and public.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Texas Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker and Air Brake Endorsement (Limited Driver's License Restrictions will be permitted for this position)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Maintain an acceptable motor vehicle driving record (conducted annually).
  • Must be insurable with the County insurance carrier.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stoop, push, pull, walk, stand, drive and lift up to 100 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works in all kinds of indoor and outdoor environments, including inclement weather (heat, cold, and wet).
  • May be exposed to dust, extreme noise and/or potentially hazardous chemical conditions.
  • Work outside of the normal office hours (Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) may be required to meet deadlines.
  • This position requires availability to address emergencies during nonstandard work week hours, including holidays and weekends.
  • Ability to work overtime when necessary.
  • Work reporting location may be anywhere within Washington County
  • Duties may be based on a work week schedule of either four 10-hour workdays or five 8-hour workdays and may be changed at any time.
  • Subject to On-Call rotation at a minimum twice per year.
