Texas Governor Greg Abbott is encouraging Texans currently in Mexico, as well as those with family members or friends traveling there, to follow travel warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State amid ongoing security operations, road blockages, and criminal activity reported in several regions of Mexico.

The U.S. Department of State has advised U.S. citizens in Baja California, Jalisco, Quintana Roo, and parts of Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to shelter in place until further notice.

State officials reported that Governor Abbott has been briefed on the evolving security situation. The State of Texas is coordinating with federal partners to monitor developments and share information related to the safety of American citizens abroad.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is working with the U.S. Department of State and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to track conditions and provide support as needed.

Texans requiring assistance or guidance may contact:

-U.S. Department of State (outside the U.S.): 1-202-501-4444
-U.S. Department of State (inside the U.S. or Canada): 1-888-407-4747
-Texas Fusion Center: 1-844-927-0521

Officials recommend travelers monitor federal travel advisories and security alerts, register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time updates, maintain regular communication with family members, and avoid areas experiencing violence or active security alerts.

Travelers are also advised to follow all instructions issued by local and federal authorities, including shelter-in-place guidance, minimize unnecessary movement, avoid crowds and law enforcement activity areas, and monitor local media for updates.

The Governor’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety stated they will continue monitoring the situation and coordinating with federal agencies to provide updated information as conditions change.
