FitnessFX proudly took on the role of an official host for the Memorial Day Murph Challenge, a rigorous workout event that pays tribute to Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy. The challenge serves as the annual fundraiser for the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, with generous support from Forged®. This article delves into the significance of the Memorial Day Murph Challenge, highlights the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, and acknowledges the participants of this year’s event.

The LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation (501c3) was founded in 2007 by Michael’s parents, Dan and Maureen Murphy, along with Michael’s brother, John. Michael was an avid reader who felt that education was key. In fact, his favorite saying was “Education will set you free.”

The Foundation’s Board began with Family, but now seats nine members consisting of Dan, Maureen, and John Murphy, as well as other close family and friends committed to keeping Michael’s life, service, sacrifice and legacy alive.

The Foundation is funded through kind donations and proceeds from The Murph Challenge, a Forged® annual fundraiser.

For those who have never heard of the Murph Challenge, it is an intense workout that serves as a testament to the physical and mental endurance required by military personnel. Named after Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, who lost his life while serving as a U.S. Navy SEAL in Afghanistan in 2005, the challenge entails a 1-mile run, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another 1-mile run. Participants have the option to wear a 20-pound weighted vest or body armor to symbolize the gear carried by military personnel during their missions.

FitnessFX proudly organized the Murph Challenge as an official host, providing an opportunity for both military personnel and civilians to honor Lieutenant Murphy’s sacrifice and support the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Participants challenged themselves to complete the demanding workout, pushing their limits and paying homage to those who have served in the armed forces.

This year’s Memorial Day Murph Challenge at FitnessFX witnessed the participation of several individuals who displayed their commitment and resilience. Among the participants, Emily Wisian completed the challenge in an impressive time of 35 minutes and 22 seconds, while Lisa Carlile finished with a time of 39 minutes and 48 seconds. Travis Bush completed the challenge in 53 minutes and 4 seconds, and Julie Carruthers finished in 48 minutes and 2 seconds. Coach Montgomery achieved a time of 49 minutes and 46 seconds, George Reyna finished in 44 minutes and 52 seconds, and Alberto Ortiz completed the challenge in an impressive 43 minutes and 41 seconds.

The Memorial Day Murph Challenge not only tests physical strength but also serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel. It allows participants to come together as a community, supporting the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation’s mission of providing educational opportunities to deserving students. Through the combined efforts of FitnessFX, participants, and generous donors, the foundation can continue honoring Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy’s legacy and ensuring that his belief in the power of education lives on.

Special thanks to Emily Wisian for providing valuable information and insights for this article as well as the group photo of the participants!
