As many parts of Texas prepare for wintry weather, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) reminds residents that extreme cold, freezing rain, ice, and snow can create serious hazards for drivers and pedestrians. Texans are urged to be prepared and exercise caution during these conditions. DPS emphasizes the importance of taking safety precautions and offers road safety tips for winter weather.

Stay informed by monitoring local weather broadcasts and checking the latest conditions from the National Weather Service before traveling. Avoid driving if sleet, freezing rain, or snow is forecasted, and check road conditions at DriveTexas.org or by calling (800) 452-9292. If travel is unavoidable, allow extra time to reach your destination and drive slowly on icy roads. Increase the distance between your vehicle and others to allow for extra stopping room, and avoid using cruise control.

Make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas and remain cautious on bridges and overpasses, where ice tends to form first. Drive more slowly when approaching these areas. Be alert for downed trees and power lines, and remember to treat intersections with non-functioning traffic lights as four-way stops.
