BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College men’s basketball was able to jump out to a fast start against Concordia JV and then use that start to cruise to a 97-77 victory Dec. 2 in Brenham.
The win wasn’t easy the whole way through as Concordia University use a lot of ball pressure to attempt to get turnovers and the Blinn guards did their job in securing the ball and scoring or getting the ball down low to the big men.
Revey Norton has shown in the last two games that he thrives when opponent put on ball pressure and he was able to score 24 points to lead the team. With the lot of pressure on the guards, that left the post a little more open and Ja’Cardo Hawkins took advantage of that space by scoring 21 points in the win.
“Once they (Concordia) put pressure on the guards then that left me one on one and then I just went ahead and did my thing,” Hawkins said after the game. “The guards do a good job of getting me the ball when the pressure is on.”
Vicktor Arnick also reached double figures with 15 points and Morris Dunnigan had a strong second half with 10 of his 12 points coming in the latter half of the game.
Blinn came out fast offensively by scoring the first 10 points of the game to take control. Norton was able to find baskets early on during that run and the entire first half as he scored 14 points in the first 20 minutes.
Hawkins was also a force in the first half with nine points as the Buccaneers were able to maintain their lead at halftime with a 45-35 edge.
“I thought that Ja’Cardo (Hawkins) really took off in the second half and that was a big difference in the game,” said Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher. “I thought that Revey (Norton) always plays with energy and has a high motor and I think he plays really good and he has done that all year for us.”
Dunnigan really found his offensive rhythm in the second half with his hustle as he scored 10 points in the final 12 minutes of the game to help Blinn pull away. Arnick also found a little open space in the second half with nine points and the Buccaneers were able to extend the lead as high as 27 points and settled for a 20-point victory at the final buzzer.
Blinn College, now 8-2 overall on the year and 1-1 in conference, will dive back into conference play with a road game at Paris Junior College Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.
