BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College women’s basketball was on fire offensively in the first half enough to grab a 20-point lead at the half. But bad shots and bad defense allowed McLennan Community College to get within striking distance. McLennan even had a shot to tie the game in the final seconds miss, allowing Blinn to come away with a 72-69 win Nov. 15 in Brenham.
Blinn made just about everything it threw towards the basket. Chant Lewis was able to score 14 points in the first half and finished with 20. Katelynn Johnson was able to hit three shots from behind the arc in the first half and finished with 17 points. Moe Bedford also chipped in eight points while Nancy Warioba and Shakera Barnes each had six points.
“I thought we had very good intensity and offensively we were on fire,” said Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins. “We shot the ball extremely well.”
As well as the Buccaneers played in the first half to build up a 20-point lead at the break it was quick shots that caused their lead to nearly dissolve. McLennan never took the lead in the second half but had a chance to tie the game up late with an open 3-point look but the shot hit the rim and missed to give Blinn College the slim victory.
“Right now, we will take any win we can get,” Jenkins said. “We found a way to not play very well and still get a win.”
Defensive effort has been an effort for the Buccaneers in the early part of the season and they allowed 45 points to McLennan but still eked out a win.
Blinn, now 4-2 in the preseason, will hit the road on Nov. 19 against Temple College for a game at 5:30 p.m.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 29 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
