In the pre-game huddle prior to a big Region XIV women’s soccer tilt against Texas Southmost College, Blinn College head coach implored her team to do one thing.
“Take shots,” Jackson said.
The Buccaneers obliged, peppering the Scorpions with 15 chances at the net while converting twice to earn a much-needed 2-0 victory on Blinn’s sophomore day Tuesday at Rankin Field in Brenham, Texas.
“Today was very pleasing because this result was a great representation of how we want to play as a football club,” Jackson explained. “We pressed in the attacking third, we took shots, we made connecting passes, and we earned a shutout. It was a great performance to celebrate our sophomores who helped create a new standard for Blinn women’s soccer.”
Blinn (6-6-1 overall, 5-5 Region XIV) just missed on a handful of scoring opportunities in the first half, but wasted little time cashing in after the break.
Sophomore midfielder Eleanor Sargeant put the Bucs on top in the 56th minute when she buried a free kick from considerable distance, placing the shot just outside the reach of the Southmost goalkeeper.

“Eleanor has been struggling with injury, but to see her score that goal from distance was brilliant and shows how talented she is,” Jackson said.
Freshman midfielder Marguerite Funk gave Blinn some breathing room in the 66th minute when she added a tally off an assist from sophomore forward Alexia Richard.
“Closing the game with a goal from a younger player like Marguerite shows the talent we have for the future,” added Jackson.
Sophomore keeper Jordan Clark helped preserve the shutout with three saves for the Bucs.
The regular season comes to a close for Blinn when the Bucs visit Jacksonville College for a region matchup at 2 p.m. on Friday in Jacksonville, Texas.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 NJCAA national championships since 1987
